This 14-day self-guided tour is a combination of what many consider to be the world’s most beautiful cruise voyage and rail excursion—the Norway in a Nutshell train journey and the Havila Voyage. You will spend 7 days cruising the Norwegian coastline where you will visit both big towns and small fising villages, cross the arctic circle and sail even further north. You will experience diverse nature, deep fjords, UNESCO protected areas and get the opportunity to join optional shore excursions.

Day 1: Welcome to Oslo

Day 2: The Highlights of Oslo

When you arrive at Oslo‘s Gardermoen Airport, make your way into Oslo‘s city centre. Many travellers opt to take the express train to Oslo Central Station, but we can arrange a private transfer for you (at additional cost). For those arriving early, we recommend exploring Oslo by foot, spending the afternoon at sights including the Munch Museum, Akershus fortress, Oslo Opera, and the Aker Brygge area.

Day 3: Explore Oslo

This morning, get an early start to explore the Norwegian capital. We recommend booking a guided bus tour that will take you along the famous landmarks of the city. Highlights include the beautiful Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Royal Palace, and Oslo City Hall.

Another option is to tour Oslo on your own visiting some of the above attractions, or others like the Fram Polar Ship Museum and Karl Johans street. You will then have the rest of the day to explore at your own leisure.

Day 4: Travel to Bergen

Get an early start and head to Oslo Central Station and travel to Bergen.

The UNESCO World Heritage site Bryggen, a Hanseatic wharf, is a glorious remnant from when Bergen was a key centre for trade between Norway and Europe. Today, the wharf houses a museum, shops, galleries, and restaurants, and is a focal point for both locals and visitors.

Day 5: Bergen

Just a stone’s throw away is the lively Fish Market which has been providing the locals with freshly caught treasures from the sea since 1276. Today, it is one of Norway’s most visited outdoor markets, and also offers fresh fruit, vegetables, handicrafts and souvenirs.

We recommend riding the Fløibanen Funicular to Mount Fløyen to enjoy the panoramic view of the city or a cable car up Mt. Ulriken. Bergen is also known for its museums dedicated to history within trade and fisheries, architecture, musical art and contemporary art.

Day 6: The Flam Railway

The highest mainline railway in Northern Europe, the scenic rail journey from Bergen to Flåm is one of the highlights of a visit to Norway – and a great way to get a taste of the fjords.

The first part of the journey, on the main Bergen to Oslo line, skims past boathouses and red painted cabins before climbing to Norway’s craggy, windswept uplands. After changing trains at Myrdal (867m above sea level) onto the private Flåmsbana, you head down into the wild Flåm valley. This is the most dramatic and scenic section of the ride and – in our opinion – the most stomach-churning!

Day 7: Havila Voyage

Enjoy the early part of the day exploring Bergen. In the evening, you’ll enter the next stage of your journey as you embark on the Norwegian Coastal Voyage with Havila. We sail with new, environmentally friendly ships which makes the world’s most beautiful costal voyage also a comfortable one.

Norway’s dramatic 2,000-kilometre west coast is one of Europe’s great attractions, and for more than 100 years, this popular journey has been offering travellers a unique combination of history, culture and incredible views.

Day 8: Florø – Måløy – Torvik – Ålesund – Geiranger- Ålesund – Molde

After the first night on board, you can start your day by waving to the Havila Voyages headquarters just off Torvik. Ålesund, is renowned for its art nouveau architecture with beautiful brick houses and warehouses. In the summer, you can continue to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Geiranger Fjord, which has steep mountainsides and dramatic waterfalls.

Day 9: Kristiansund – Trondheim – Rørvik

It is morning when we dock in the historic city of Trondheim, which was founded over a thousand years ago. Nidaros Cathedral is the landmark of the city; it is Norway’s national shrine and one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe. After our visit here, the voyage continues out into the fjord, into an abundant archipelago and heads for northern Norway.

Day 10: Brønnøysund – Sandnessjøen – Nesna – Ørnes – Bodø – Stamsund – Svolvær

On this stretch, we mark crossing the Arctic Circle with a ceremony and continue onward into the Arctic regions. It means midnight sun in the summer, while winter days are merely a shade less dark than night-time and, possibly, Northern Lights in the evenings. Nature is powerful with northern Scandinavia’s largest glacier, the world’s strongest tidal current and encounters with the majestic sea eagle. In the evening, Lofoten’s fishing villages, steep mountains and Vikings await.

Day 11: Stokmarknes – Sortland – Risøyhamn – Harstad – Finnsnes – Tromsø – Skervøy

The voyage continues on through narrow fjords and past wild mountains to Tromsø, a city characterised by hunting and fishing, polar expeditions and courage. Now you have also reached the land of the Sami, Norway’s indigenous people. Meeting the Sami and their reindeer while hearing about the Sami culture is a unique experience you will remember.

Day 12: Hammerfest – Havøysund – Honningsvåg – Kjøllefjord – Mehamn – Berlevåg

As far north as you can get – by land and sea. For many, the visit to the North Cape is a high point and a goal for voyages along the Norwegian coast. Up here in the polar landscape, nature is at its harshest and most desolate, but between bare plains and rugged cliffs people cling on and reap nature’s bounty. You can also have a taste of the catch. How about some king crab?

Day 13: Båtsfjord – Vardø – Vadsø – Kirkenes

Enjoy one last breakfast at sea before the ship docks in Kirkenes around 9:00 this morning. This Arctic town lies on the borders of Russia and Finland and is home to some 3,300 inhabitants, including the Sámi, the native people of Lapland. For such a small town, Kirkenes offers an impressive range of things to see and do, and the rest of the day is free for you to try out an optional excursion or just relax in the town. It is here that your cruise up north comes to an end.

Disembark the cruise and head to the Snowhotel. You will sleep near in the premises of the hotel in luxurious Gamme cabins. Our cabins are inspired by the traditional hunting and fishing hut, “gamme”, that you find in the wilderness in the Sami areas of the Arctic. The large panoramic window and lounge chairs covered in sheepskins, will ensure you will be very comfortable while looking for northern lights, from the warmth of your cabin.

Day 14: Kirkeness

In the morning, go for a Husky hike in the mountains surrounding the Snowhotel and go King crab fishing on the Barents sea in our high-speed RIB’s.

Then in the evening transfer to Kirkeness Airport to catch flight to Tromso. You will sleep at an airport hotel

Day 15: Malta Arrival
